I believe in evolution!

There seems to be some confusion as to whether I believe in evolution or not. Just so it’s clear, here is what I believe:

(1) All life forms on this planet evolved from common ancestors through adaptive genetic changes over time.

(2) Anyone who denies (1) is basically rejecting half of the sciences. It’s an inane position.

(3) Rejecting evolution for intelligent design is even more inane. However complex life is, the being(s) that created it would have to be far more complex. So however improbable evolution may seem to you, intelligent design is far, far more improbable.

(4) “Darwinism” is an incorrect term. Ever since the discovery of DNA, the theory of evolution has been called Neo-Darwinism. Calling people Darwinists is anachronistic at best, and a poisoning-the-well reference to Social Darwinism at worse.

Now back to your regularly scheduled posts.

I had no doubt about it! And that’s exactly my position too.

“You seem to assume I am for gun control. This is not a fair representation of my position: I actually have a much more subtle position than that. A priori I am not for or against gun control, and I think both sides woefully simplify and distort the debate.”

I’m against gun control, but I agree that both sides oversimplify and distort the debate.

I’ve actually written a whole entry on the topic, so I’m not especially keen in repeating myself. I can send you the text of it if you want.

Thank you, but I don’t need that in advance, but I’m sure that debate will be interesting…
