I’m Getting Arrested, for your Android.

This might be useful for some people out there: the I’m Getting Arrested app.

It lets you quickly notify your family, friends, and crack legal team (if you have one) of your situation with a single tap of your finger. Just initially enter a custom message and some SMS-ready numbers to contact in the event of your arrest. Then, as you’re about to be corralled into the back of a squad car, fire the app up and long-press the bull’s-eye for 2 seconds. From there, you can rest assured that your message will be sent to the appropriate contacts.

I don’t really get it. How can you use your cell phone if you’re in handcuffs? Oh well.

Depending on the police protocol, you might have your hands cuffed in front.

Also, depending on the situation, you might have time before you’re cuffed anyway. A lot of activists (and a journalist or two) have been able to send out SMS texts (and the longer typing that involves) when being arrested.

This won’t work well for fast developing, one-on-one or violent arrests. Those are the times you’re likely to be tackled and have your hands cuffed behind you. But variants of this app and similar ideas have worked for slower, non-violent arrest scenarios, like passive resistance protests.

Or if you have time to pull your cell phone and push the button before you’re tackled.
