This leaves out the faux-feminist who really wants to prey on feminist women to regain a sense of power and control…the most dangerous kind (if he’s any good at pretending). He either wants to become a spokesperson for the feminist movement, making it all about him (rather than being an ally)–usually this sort of man is more aligned with liberal rather than radical feminism–or he just wants to manipulate powerful women on an individual level, to put them back where they belong (under his thumb); this can be emotional abuse, gaslighting, or physical abuse like sexual assault, if he thinks he can get away with it.
I have unfortunately come to realize that if I try to make it as a writer or academic I am going to run into this kind of man a LOT: at conferences, at workshops, residencies and retreats; he will be everywhere, because academic men who are involved in academic (and the arts) want to date the women around them, and the women around them are feminist; so if they are secretly misogynists (which in a world in which academic consistently pushes women out of higher ed administrative roles, pays them less, devalues their work, and still holds up manly man male role models in most of the humanities and praises a male canon in almost everything is going to be very common) they will have to pretend to be feminists who see women as people and value their work, while really seeing them as prey; as sex objects and competitors whose work and ideas must be continually devalued while reminding them at all times of their main value, which is fuckability.
So, I will have to be on the lookout for this type of man. The “feminist” anti-feminist (we could also just call him “The Liar” or “The Mansplaining Feminist,”–actually there are many distinct categories of the “Feminist anti-feminist.”).
Yea, that’s a great analysis. I think you’ve nailed that one on the head. Likewise, there’s a lot of racists who have to hide it in their daily lives. But we see all that misogyny and racism on the Internet, where they feel like they can hide.
I mean to say “men who are involved in academia” and “which in a world in which academia consistently pushes women out of higher ed administrative roles” etc.
This cartoon omits the “male feminist anti-feminist” like Barry Deutsch himself who set up a “feminist” site and once it had sufficient traffic sold SEO links on it to porn companies without telling the participants. The “male feminist anti-feminist” eagerly joins “Everyday Feminism” in order to tell feminists how stupid and shitty they are.
Brilliant, and funny!

Yeah but it’s okay because it’s all voluntary. Right? Right???

Don’t forget the guy who says, “well, now I can hit girls because we’re all equal, right?”
